Kat

Restraining spells can be a very powerful tool for a mage. It is recommended that you practice this particular spell with a teammate before attempting it against a supernatural opponent. If a mundane can break your spell, you have zero chance against a paranormal being or a demon.

Kat put her tablet down. “Hey, Jordan, come here for a moment.”

Jordan Fox walked towards her desk. “Yes, Agent Dark?”

Kat focused her energy on her partner and imagined him freezing in place. She threw out her hand as if releasing a ball of magic at him.

Jordan didn’t move. In fact, his entire body was frozen in place. Her restraining spell had worked! Pleased with her progress, Kat did a little dance, ending with her head tucked into her elbow and her other arm straight out, a stylish dab that would make Cam Newton proud.

With her dance completed, Kat released the spell on Jordan, who immediately flew into a rage. “God damn it, Dark. Don’t you ever practice your magic on me again.” He then stormed out of the bull pen.

“Nice spell, Kat,” Agent Seran said. “Your magic is improving.”

Kat frowned as she watched Jordan leaving the room. She had not expected that reaction from her partner. She knew he wouldn’t approve, but the level of anger he’d shown was way more than she’d expected. “Not everyone agrees with you, Seran.”

The vampire shrugged. “Some people don’t like losing control. Being restrained by magic is very difficult for some.”

“But he’s my partner. He’s supposed to be helping me,” Kat said.

“I don’t think he sees it that way,” Agent Seran said. “Jordan has been doing this job for a while. He’s never had a partner like you before. It will take a while for him to get used to you.”

“And using magic on him probably doesn’t help,” Kat mumbled.

Agent Seran, with his vampire hearing, heard her clearly. “Yes, I don’t think you gained any points with Agent Fox today.”

“I don’t suppose you’d let me practice on you?”

Agent Seran gave Kat a predatory look. “Only if I can practice on you.”

Kat wasn’t sure what he intended to practice on her. Vampires didn’t have magic restraining spells. Perhaps she needed someone else to practice with. “Maybe another time. Have we heard back from the lab yet?”

“It will be at least another day. The labs tend to bump us down the list,” Agent Seran said.

“Seriously? A demon loose on the streets isn’t a high priority for the FBI?”

“Welcome to the job, kid. The regular feds think that we all just sit up here waving magical wands and chanting leviosa between solving crimes. They prefer to spend time catching humans. The lab reports will get here and they’ll be thorough, just not quick.”

Kat sighed. Even in the MBI, bureaucracy was a hard beast to take. “Thanks, Seran. And it’s levi-OH-sa. Not levi-oh-SAH.” Frustrated that she’d managed to royally piss off her new partner, Kat decided she’d finish the rest of the day at home working on her magical studies. Perhaps later when she met up with Vesper she’d be a more willing test subject.
